Many people have thought about raising their own chickens, and all they need to have fresh, organic eggs, is a few chicken supplies. There are some suburbs that will allow chickens to fall under the classification as pets, but for those that have acreage, raising chickens and selling fresh, organic eggs can become a profitable business. Free-range chickens are a popular choice, so many of these people consider starting with plenty of free range chickens, to raise them for meat and eggs to be sold for profit.

Chickens can help keep the insect population under control, and when free ranging, only need a minimal amount of feed that contains extra nutrients. Once you have your chicken supplies and your chickens, you don't need much else to get started but a chicken coop and fenced chicken yard to protect them at night. Most of the time, you won't have to do much to get the chickens to come to their chicken coop, especially once they get used to finding their watering containers and roosts.

Chickens are one of the easiest farm animals to raise. One of the most important things is that you get more hens than roosters, and reliable hatcheries can tell the sex of the chicks at a very young age. In fact, you don't want to have more than one rooster for every dozen hens.

Another thing to keep in mind is that roosters will fight with each other, so you might need to consider separate areas, if you are trying to raise chicks. By providing separate chicken yards for each rooster, you can put a particular rooster in each area, as you grow your operation.

When it comes to the chicken supplies you will need, a chicken coop is a must, and farm fencing to enclose the yard surrounding it is necessary, if you have a larger chicken operation. If you are a backyard farmer in the suburbs, you can use a corner of your backyard, or get a portable chicken coop that can be moved around and fertilize your yard while providing you with fresh eggs. Of course, you will need watering containers, and if you are feeding normal chicken feed, the chickens are going to need feeding containers or dispensers, too. Other chicken supplies to consider are the incubators, heat sources and other things that apply to your particular situation. There is a fine line between raising chickens as a hobby and giving your family plenty of fresh eggs. When you get into a larger operation, you only need a small amount of acreage to raise a lot of chickens, and you can buy chicken coops of all sizes, or kits to build them yourself.

Sometimes, you might be able to get a deal on used chicken supplies or close-out specials, if you know where to look. You can find everything you need, if you find private sellers, auctioneers and dealers that are trying to get rid of their operation.
