Quail Hatching Eggs

If you like poultry, but consider yourself an urban farmer or city farmer, raising quail can be a great way to raise meat, and make money selling quail hatching eggs. There are some quail that can be raised six to eight of them in a square foot, but the Eastern Bobwhite is a little larger and takes about 14 to 16 weeks to start laying eggs from the time they are born. When you are raising quail hatching eggs, you will definitely need an incubator, because quail will not hatch their eggs in captivity. If you are raising quail in your garage or on outdoor deck, you will need space to brood them into full feather, until they are hardy enough to stay outdoors. When looking for the quail eggs for sale to get started, you will want to consider Coturnix quail, which will start laying at about six weeks old, or the Eastern Bobwhite, since those are most successfully raised by beginners.

The quail hatching eggs from the Eastern Bobwhite will be smaller and whiter than Coturnix, although the Bobwhites grow into larger quail, if you are raising them for meat. Quail are monogamous birds, so once you have a successful breeding pair, you're best to leave them alone. This also means you should plan on an equal number of males and females, and a total of twenty birds is a good number to start with and maintain.

If you want the quail to keep laying eggs, you will need to keep them inside. Otherwise, they will stop laying eggs in the autumn and through the winter months. If you plan to have quail eggs for sale, you will want to consider that you can keep them in cages, and rabbit hutches work well. You can leave them outdoors when they have feathered out during spring and summer, but you will need to be prepared to accommodate the cages inside during the cooler months.

Once you have mastered incubating the eggs, (which take between 18 and 23 days, depending on breed), you might consider enlarging your stock. Just remember that you will need to incubate the eggs you don't sell, and sell the quail you don't eat, so that is something to consider. Another thing is to make sure you don't need a wildlife license in your State to raise and offer quail eggs for sale, and check with city ordinances, if you are raising a large number that could be considered a nuisance.
