There is a variety of logging supplies and equipment to make extra money with, whether you own wooded acreage or not. Of course, if you are buying them to clear some of your own acreage, there can be a two-sided cost equation to figure out.

The first part is what you would have to pay somebody to clear the acreage for you, and the other side factor to consider is how much used logging equipment would cost you to buy. Besides this part of the equation, you might want to consider what kind of money you could make or save, if you were able to produce products from the wood that was harvested.

Examples would include selling larger, higher priced standing timber, like large walnut and oak trees, or how many cords of harvested firewood you could sell or use for heating. Another part of the equation would be if you had a pellet mill that would allow you to make wood pellets for fuel, animal bedding, and other varieties of uses. As you can see, there might be an argument to be made that buying your own logging supplies could be a worthwhile investment.

This doesn't take into account that you could use the equipment to perform labor for others that might need it. Also, if you were to process your logs to build a log cabin, the investment in the equipment would be the majority of your wood cost on the project, besides your labor, of course. There are a number of reasons that you might want to consider this investment, especially if you have your own wooded acreage that has a large number of trees to be processed or cleared.

Of course, it is important that you do the math, but it will almost always show that you would come out ahead, unless you just had a few trees to worry about. That can change the cost effectiveness, unless you could find other uses, or plan to do some contracting. If you can find used logging equipment, you might be able to find some good deals on the automatic log splitters, pellet mills, chainsaws, and other logging supplies you would need.

Part of the problem with finding this equipment is to know where to look for the listings from the private sellers that are liquidating theirs, or dealers that might have taken it in on trade. These listings aren't easily found on the Internet, so you could spend weeks looking for them.
