Oliver Tractors

Oliver tractors became popular as the first chilled plow, and in 1929, the Oliver Corporation was formed with the merger of the Oliver Chilled Plow, Hart-Parr, Nichols and Shepherd and American Seeding Machine companies. It wasn't until 1960 that White Tractors acquired Oliver, but during the period, they introduced their four cylinder engines in 1930, when they came out with the Oliver 18-28 tractors, and many of the following models were popular, such as the 60, 70 and 80 series. In 1948, the next series of 66, 77 and 88 were introduced, which were also popular Oliver tractors.

When Oliver Chilled Plow was founded, it was based on the chilled plow process, which hardened the outer layer of cast-iron, making it capable of breaking through heavier soils than anything else on the market. As a plow-maker, Oliver used innovative processes to give better durability than anything else on the market. As a tractor maker, they were able to ride on the coattails of the reputation and enjoy a relatively stable period, until farm crisis periods became more frequent and widespread.

After the purchase by White tractors, there were other tractors that were merged into the family, including the Minneapolis Moline tractors, that had been a large company in their own rights. Some of the Oliver tractors were actually sold under the Minneapolis Moline name, which is important for collectors to know.

If you are in the tractor restoration business, you might already know this fact, but locating these original tractors that were sold under a different name can amount to a big difference in resale on the collector market. Some of these last Oliver tractors were sold under the G series of Minneapolis Moline tractors, which also lost their brand identity a decade after the White acquisition.

When White tractors sold to AGCO, there were no longer any of these original brands that maintained their integrity, which is what makes them sought by the antique tractor collectors. For those that run across these rare finds, you can expect them to fetch a good profit once they have been restored. Sometimes, the problem is finding them to begin with.

In fact, there are many of these old tractors that are sitting and rusting away on farmland that is no longer worked, and sometimes, the heirs have not even discovered grandpa's old tractor back in the barn or pasture. As they are being discovered, they are making their way to the Internet, but it can take days and weeks to find them, if you don't know where they are listed.
